Trevor Newton's Bio

Trevor NewtonTrevor Newton was born in Austin, Texas in 1988. A few years later he and his family moved to Dripping Springs, a small town in the Texas Hill Country. It was here that he was first introduced to the martial arts.

During his childhood Trevor’s parents enrolled him in many different sports including soccer, baseball, and swimming. Although all of the sports were fun, he quickly lost interest and motivation. After he had quit every youth sports team in the town, Trevor’s parents decided to try the martial arts. At the age of seven Trevor began taking Tae Kwon Do classes at a local dojang.

Trevor continued practicing TKD through middle school and high school. It was during his freshman year that he was first introduced to Brazilian jiu-jitsu through his cousin, a NHB fighter. One year later Joao Crus opened the first BJJ school in Dripping Springs. Trevor was the first student to sign up and soon recruited his father and best friend. He soon started seeing many flaws and impracticalities in TKD, and began questioning its effectiveness. Trevor decided to test the effectiveness of BJJ at a TKD Black Belt Fight Night. That night he beat five higher ranked black belts without throwing a single punch or kick. Convinced as to the superiority of BJJ, Trevor quit TKD a week before testing for third degree black belt.

Trevor began training BJJ full time and soon became Joao Crus' assistant. After two years he earned his blue belt and began teaching classes for adults and children. During his senior year of high school, Trevor upped his training to six days a week for 3 hours each day and added no-gi submission wrestling and muay thai kickboxing.

He is now attending Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where he has established the Texas State Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Club and is currently the president.
